Peer Notes and Challenges

Some feedback from other students in my class after our brief presentations.

Peer Notes
A lot of suggestions about adjusting my target audience towards adults rather than college students.

Notes suggesting I focus on either just NASA programs or all space programs in general. My approach will be to just be an advocate for space exploration and research as a whole.

Find ways to keep the audience engaged. Throughout the video how will I keep the viewer captivated?

Biggest Challenge
I think the biggest challenge will be creating the script, figuring out what information to tell the guidance that will create a story. Along with that figuring out the best way to visually show this information. I want to create a visually captivating mini movie. Not just a fun graphic video that throws a bunch of info and visuals at the viewer.

The Script… In progress

Working on the script for the next week, goal is to have a working script by Jan 21st.

I'm back baby!

After a long Co-op semester in NYC working at NBC, I am back in class and hitting the capstone project head-on. Not much work was done over the past semester while I was out of the classroom, other than just thinking about the project and the next steps to take. Now it truly starts.

Today in class we presented our projects to classmates, just a casual refresher on what we are each focusing on and any updated thoughts, imagery and insights before we all begin really diving into the real work.

Today I am also working on completing a finished draft of the video script. This is really the next crucial part of the entire project. The script will determine what visual elements will need to be created, which will set the pace and tone of the entire video.

Project Brief v05

Alright… approaching this another way. I have been trying to figure out what aspect of this space thing I want to focus on.

  1. How to get more funding for the space program, money to NASA? or other private companies SpaceX?
  2. Inspiring people (students) who may not care about the space program? Getting them to aspire to be in the STEM fields related to space exploration.
  3. Educating the public adults (18-35) about the true costs and great benefits that come from the space program.

Revising the Project Brief

Current Problem Statement

In order for the US to return to a thriving nation powered by discovery, Americans must restore their faith in NASA, discard old misconceptions and become educated on the true benefits and cost of the space program.

The current state of the US space program is nearly at a standstill. NASA receives just 0.5% of the total federal budget. The current generation of high school and college students have grown up without space education at the forefront.

A campaign that can inform and inspire curiosity and discovery will drive students to become passionate about the universe, the space program and the benefits of space exploration. This curiosity will fuel education, science, and funding.

My current problem statement is trying to address different problems. My next step is trying to narrow down the real issue I want to address.

  1. Getting more funding for NASA?

  2. Just getting students interested in space?

  3. Creating job opportunities for the next generation?

  4. Reminding adults about the benefits of the space program?

  5. Addressing the misconception of "Why are we spending billions of dollars up there in space when we have pressing problems down here on Earth?"

Practice Brief Presentation

This past Wednesday each student had to present their brief presentation to the class for practice and to get some feedback from others. It was really helpful to see what others are doing and how they addressed each question and subtopic: (Problem statement, Audience, Stakeholders, Outcomes, Research, Benchmarking.)

Areas to address and things to work on. Comments from classmates.

  • Why should we want more funding?
  • Why is it important to me?
  • Pick just one audience to focus on.
  • Diagram stakeholders better, more visual, graphical
  • Decide your audience.
  • Hone in the problem statement to a specific focus.
  • Explain the innovations and other benefits from exploration.
  • Talk about the lack of space education in schooling currently.
  • Touch on more positives rather than just negatives.

Presenting the Project Brief

Currently working on creating a presentation that will present my chosen topic, to faculty members for review.

Current Problem Statment:
Currently the US space program has funding of just 0.5% of the total federal budget. Considering all that mankind has gained from the space program, this is not enough. Creating a campaign that will inform and inspire curiosity and discovery, will drive people to become passionate about the universe, the space program and the benefits of space exploration. This curiosity will fuel education and science.

A Working Title

Exploring potential titles for an awareness campaign that will inspire people to keep discovering and remain curious about space and the undiscovered.

Working Title:
BEyond (The power of curiosity)

Problem Statement:
Considering all that mankind has gained from the space program, I’d like to create a brand campaign that will inform and inspire curiosity and discovery, driving people to become passionate about science, the space program and the benefits of space exploration. Creating a call to action for people to become advocates for space.

Creating a Project Brief

Next steps are to create a project brief explaining the problem or issue I would like to address, and laying out the process of how I will approach a solution and create design deliverable(s).

Communication artifacts are a response to the most common human communication need — to present a specific message with specific content to a specific audience. Successful communication artifacts help an audience to take action, take better action, avoid incorrect action, reach a decision, and/or reason better about some topic. The complexity of these problems depends on the complexity of the message, the receptiveness of the audience, and situational constraints.

Primary Questions:

Current Situation:
Audience?
Are there aspects of the audience’s situation that are clearly undesirable? Undesirable for whom? . . .

What differentiates the audience from a generic human, and in a way that can inform design decisions? What differentiates them from similar audiences? (knowledge, Immediate environment(s), physical/cognitive/perceptual abilities or limitations, values, beliefs, resources (time, money, social, etc.), professional agenda, personal agenda, relationships.)

Who will the message come from?
What is their stake in the matter?

Ideal Situations:
What will the audience do, ideally, after the encounter?
What new situation(s) will the above action(s)help bring about?
How will success be measured?

Design Intervention:
What is the general message?
Is it persuasive and/or informative?

Content:
What formats? Script, copy , image, video, audio, 3D Models, maps, data, etc.

Where will the content come from?
Curated? From where? By who? Using what criteria?
Will you need placeholder content anyway?
Will it be created? By who? By you? When?
Are there specific considerations or unknowns due to the nature of the content?
Specifics about the deliverable? Page count, running time, etc.
Minimum viable product?
Any details about material, technology, location/space, duration of the encounter, etc. that could affect design decisions?
What will I have to craft that I haven’t crafted before? What do I need to learn?

Additional known unknowns?

Topic Selected.

My passion and interest in space has once again become apparent, and will now take form in a capstone project. My plan is to create and brand a campaign that will educate and inspire people to become passionate about the space program and space exploration.

A call to action to become an advocate for space. To inspire people to spread the word, talk to a local congressman, and spread awareness about the importance of space exploration.

Week 2 Refelections

Traveling deeper into space exploration as a topic.

One idea is that I'd like to create a campaign explaining the importance of the space program, educating people on the benefits and the great discoveries that have come from space exploration. Teaching people about the current materials, products and research that have become part of our everyday lives, and no one has realized has come from the work done in the space program. How much there still is left to learn and discover.

Researching Topics

  • Space exploration and it's importance.
  • Space program and education, what innovations and knowledge mankind gains from space exploration.
  • 51st State - An informative video and design campaign on the benefits of colonizing the moon. Establishing a transportation between Earth and the Moon
